30/09/08 - versusReal Kenilworth reserves - Home - Kent cup - 1-3loss

Alex - Grant - Pennell - Worby - West(allyman)- R rose - Watson - Pinder1 - A Rose- Maynard - Mchale(Badham)

Tactical changes were made to the starting 11 today to allow for the team to adopt a more defensive attitude. This game was more about the performance than the result, and I wanted to see that the team could defend as a unit. Kenilworth the divisions top goal scorers and Cuxton the divisions second top goal scorers, with us having conceded the most goals as well would prove to be an interesting game. Cuxton got got off to a poor start when within 2 minutes a rash challenger from our right back lead to a penalty decision, and a goal for the away team. To our credit Cuxton then proceeded to carve out chance after chance with Pinder in blistering attacking form, and it was Maynard that combined with Pinder who then went on to a run into the box, cut inside and shot into the top corner to equalize. 1-1 and well done to Pinder for staying on his feet when he could have gone down after a rash challenge.

With the scores even at half time for the first time this season the midfield four had worked soo hard tracking and marking to help the defense, and week new that it would only take one goal and we could be back in the game. However the second half saw tired legs and gaps opening up in our team, with which Kenilworth started to exploit. Shortly after half time a quick goal by the away team from a counter down the middle and the scores were 1-2.

Chances at both end follows, with our post being hit, and our keeper in blistering form to deny their strikers. WE had numerous shots and chances too, one a three on 1 situation which our player failed to release the ball. Right at the end a move down our left led to another goal and a final score of 3-1 to real Kenilworth. All in all a good performance which saw at least 4 yellow card to the opposition team and a good solid foundation to build on for next week. Man of the match award goes to Alex the keeper who just pies the skipper Pennell to it.

30/09/08 - versusSpartac Reserves - Home - league - 3-5

Alex - Allyman - Pennell - Worby - West) - Ryan - Watson - Pinder - Grant- Maynard 2- Rose1

Same old story for Cuxton. They were warned before the game that Spartac would be a good team and would not give up for the full duration of the game. We were warned that the only way to beat them would be to compete for 90 minutes. The game started well enough with Cuxton forcing them to play the ball in their own half and then pressing them on the ball, which they did not like. The first goal came courtesy of Rose pressing a defender for panicked gave the ball to Rose who delightfully slotted beneath the keeper.

Cuxton quickly conceded though as we took our foot off the gas. Both our full backs were getting constantly caught out where they were having to press a midfielders goal, and as a result a quick to goals were conceded down our left side. It is becoming a regular part of our game that the midfield unit of four are all too happy to do the fancy work when we are attacking but when we do not have the ball, do not want to track, mark and press (with exception of Watson). No fault can be given to our strikers who did more closing down, tracking and marking than the midfield unit.

A third goal just before half time for Spartac came from a miss hit cross which lobbed in over the keeper from about 30 yards. At 3 -1 down at half time we only had ourselves to blame. However we came out at half time playing much better and Maynard headered in another goal from a good Pinder cross. Shortly after Cuxton who were much better at set pieces this game failed to deal with a throw in which was diverted into our own net for our first own goal of the season. 4-2!

Maynard who played his best game so far then got us right back in the game with once again a good through ball from Pinder , a great take down from Maynard and a finish Michael Owen would have been proud of. We had a good 10 minutes of domination of trying to get back into the game, which by then was too late, and all our pressing at this point led to the last goal conceded, to leave the final score at 5 -3 to Spartac. In amongst the action, Maynard had 2 disallowed, one a one on one finish, which even the opposing team said was on side and the other a chip from Rose which looked to be going in which Maynard touched from an offside position, so the game could have been different. Spartac were by far the best team we have played so far. Autos need to realize that defending is about the 11 players on the field, and not just about the back line. The difference between winning and losing at the moment is soo slim, and lady luck must change soon.

MY man of the match despite our loss goes to Maynard this week who just edges it over R Rose. Rose worked hard, closed down well and should have had 2 goals, but Maynard gets it due to the 4 scored (2 disallowed) and his efforts too.

23/09/08 - versus Rainhm Eagle Reserves - away - league - 3-3

Alex - Allyman - Pennell - Worby - Ryan(west) - Amusa(Adinloa) - Watson - Pinder1 - Grant- Maynard 2- Mchale(rose)

Cuxton started the game in blistering form, and found themselves 2 goals up within the first 15 minutes. The first was on 4 minutes when the keeper making his debut took a long kick which Maynard took down, and slotted straight in passed the keeper. Then on 10 minutes, Pinder who started at 100 miles an hour , went on a run, rounded a few players and smashed home a thunderbolt from 25 yards out. The opposing team struggled to cope with Pinder through out the first 15 minute period.

However in all fairness they they too had about 3 one on ones which they kept missing. Until on 20 minutes down the right side a run by the opposing winger who gave both our full backs problems lead to Grant (who tracked well through the whole game) giving away a free kick, which was finished sweetly by the opposing player, into the keepers top left corner.

Half time, with the score at 2- 1 to us and really we were lucky we hadn’t conceded any more. Unfortunately after half time we only went out with one of our midfielders working when we did not have possession of the ball (Grant) and as we all know, you need all 4 midfielders to work together as a unit when we do not have the ball. This did not happen and midfield failed to go press and look for the ball, and not only that didn’t bother tracking half the time too. Eventually after a catalogue of errors and lost possession, from one end of the field, in a good attacking possession, Pinder failed to release the ball out to Amusa out wide in a good possession, lost the ball, and their counter attack went all the way down the left side of out defense resulting in goal, 2-2.

The 2 opposing strikers caused us no end of problems with their pace and work rate, and on a number of times our keeper had to pull off many a good save. In the last half of the second half Pinder found space out wide on the right, crossed and Maynard who worked hard through out headed in well at the far post. 3 – 2 and we should have had game over. Mchale missed a great chance to finish the game off when with 4 players in the box failed to cross and shot wide instead. Also Adinola, and Rose all had chanced right at the end but just could not find the net. With 3 minutes to go Cuxton conceded a corner, and yet again failed to mark and track, with the header going in at the near post (who was on the post?)

On the day a fair result as chances could have gone either way, but Cuxton will be disappointed that they didn’t capitalize on the opening half. Midfield have to learn than to do more than just attack, and team have to learn to defend set pieces. Over all good performances from Alex in goal, and Maynard upfront, but Worby snatches the man of the match award for his continuing improvement over the last few games.

In the last few minutes of the game, a bad tackle on Pinder led to him retaliating, and the other player throwing a punch. Both were sent off.

16/09/08 - versus Cuxton91s - home - kent cup - 5 -4

West - Allyman - Pennell - Worby - Ryan - Amusa2 - Watson - Pinder2 - Grant( Adinola) - Maynard - Mchale1

Autos started well as usual, keeping most of the play in their half but failing to capitalise. It took 10 minutes for 91s to break the deadlock when one on their player hit an absolute thunderbolt from just outside the box which rebounded in off the crossbar giving West no chance in goal. On 15 minutes Pinder took a deep free kick putting it straight onto the head of Mchale who heading in from about 8 yards, 1-1!

But Autos failed to take the initiative when almost straight away 91s went down our left, and West in goal came flying out to the edge of his box to be beaten for the second time in the game, 1-2. This is what frustrates me about our team, knowing we have the players to win games but consistantly performing for 90 minutes. Straight from kick-off, Mchale and Pinder combined literally running through the whole team with Pinder finishing well from just inside the box, 2-2. It was at this point that we realy started to play. Watson on his return was superb winning absolutely everything in midfield and and Pinder was at his creative best. On 36 minutes Grant crossed the ball in from deep and Amusa headered in, but the ref deemed that the whole ball had not crossed the line. I consider the ref to have had a good game on the whole but I do think the ball did cross the line. Nevertheless, we kept plugging away and eventually got another when the superb Pinder once again supplied a great ball into Amusa to head in from close range.

Shortly before half time we got another when PInder once again took a deep free kick from within our own half and the ball bounced over the keepers head straight in. 4-2 at half time!

I said to Autos lets go out the second half, not get carried away and play sensibly and kill the game off. However in true Autos fashion we had to make the game difficult for ourselfs. On 56minutes Adinola came on for Grant in a straight swap. Then on 65 minutes 91s keeper took a long goal kick and the ball bounced straight in over our keepr!, 4-3, and suddenly 91s were back in the game! Eventually the inevitably happend and on 63 minuts from a corner 91s headed in and the score was event. It looked like the game could go to extra time. Then on 75 minuts a superb effort from Maynard from just outside the box saw him hit the crossbar. Was it goin to be our day?

With literaly 3 minutes of play left, a move down our right side saw WAtson flick the ball on to Aumusa to head home his second on the game! leaving Autos as the winners 5-4 on the day. Not a bad performance Autos, but again plenty of room for improvement. My man of the match was a tought choice. Again defence was tighter and played well, however, particulary in the first half midfiel was superb with Watson and PInder playing well together. WIth pinders 2 goals, and 1 assists as well as his superb performance, he just edges it over Watson for me.

09/09/08 - versus Deanwood - home - junior cup - 0 - 3

West (gk) . Allyman (lb) . Pennell (cb) . Worby (cb) - Rose (rb) - Goad (lw) . Adinola (cm) . Pinder (cm) . Grant (rw) - Mchale (st) . Maynard (st)

Cuxton started with a much tighter defence than last week. Good coverage and organising from West kept chances to a minimun in the first half. Only one ball in open play sneaked through the middle of the two centre backs with Deano sving well from the following shot. Once again a setpiece poorly defended lead to a goal from a corner, with a shot first cleared off the line from Allyman, who had a good game at the back.

With one goal at half time Cuxton went out with all to play for in the second half. However, would you believ it but anothe setpiece, and another goal conceded. Cuxton were now 2 goals down with time running out. Numerous chances were carved out with Cuxton failing to take any of them . Misses intfront of the goal on more than one ocassion and chances spurned. The ever impressive Pinder was once again the key to most attacking moves. His constant runnning and creative vision could not be controled for the opposition. Pinder supplied many through balls and cross feild passes, keeeping Cuxton in the game all the way through. However a change in system as the game went on allowed a few more chances as Cuxton went to 3 at the back. West between the sticks pulled off at least 4 fantastic saves, but evenually was beaten when a half chance was taked by the oppossition.

THe game ending 3 nill, but an improvement on last week. PInder, Allyman, and WEst all playing well, and the 2 centre backs having a much better game than last week. Even though we lost the game, im gonna give man of the match to Pinder who never stopped working.

02/09/08 -versus Globe & Engine - home - league - 6 - 8

Boreham (gk) . Allyman (lb) . Pennell (cb) . West (cb) . Worby (rb) . Goad1 (lw) . Adinola1 (cm) . Pinder1 (cm) . Grant (rw) . Mchale2 (st) . Rose1 (st)

First game of the season and if it wasnt for the 6 goals scored a total mess. The first half saw Cuxton go 3 goals up and look well in control of the game with the other team arguing amongst themselves. Hovever 2 defensive errors saw Cuxton concede straight before half time. After that Cuxton came out in the second half all over the place. Our defence was all over the place with no organisation and players marking the same players, and leaving others free. They lost their heads to quickly and totally lost concentration on the game. Every time we attacked we scored and everytime they went forward they scored too. It was quite frankly the worse case of sunday league defending i have ever witnessed. Not only that but our stand in goal keeper was having an absolute mere, which was quite understandable with the abuse he was taking off his own players.

Mchale and Rose both played well upfront chasing down balls and creating space. Mchale scored 2 good goals, but the pick of the bunch was Roses 25 yard chip. Pinder was instrumental in midfield, causing absolute havoc to the opposing defence, with his quick brain. Adinola came to life in the second half, battling, traking and passing well also getting on the score sheet. Goad had a good few chancing putting one away in the box with a well executed goal. Pinder scored himself in the second half too from inside the box. Allyman had a sound game at the back for Cuxton, dispite the overall poor defensive display.

With key players waiting to come back next week for Cuxton (Ian and DAve Badham, WAtson and Maynard), a defensive shuffle will be need to improve the performance. No man of the match for me in this game though PInder and Mchale would have pushed close for one if we had won the game.
